Andy Warhol Influences (with quotes)
"Once you got Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again" Andy Warhol, 1980
The images and philosophy of Andy Warhol are a strong influence on what we do at Artake.
Warhol caught the mood of his time, a reaction against the abstract expressionism of
Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, a liberation from intellectual mystery in art
and the social posturing for its acceptance.
"And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again" AW, 1980
Warhol embraced the techniques of mass production which fed consumer society.
"Making money is art, and working is art, and good business is the best art." AW, 1975
The spirit in which he captured his era is just as relevant today. Just as he borrowed
from the techniques of mass production to create his works, so we follow by appealing
to today’s concept of mass customization.
Mass customization offers individually tailored but affordable products where, previously,
affordable implied standardised goods resulting from the economies of scale of factory
production: “You can have any color you like so long as it’s black” as someone once said.
"Machines have less problems. I'd like to be a machine, wouldn't you?" AW, 1963
It is of course not just the process where we seek inspiration from Warhol. We embrace
the immediacy, the freshness (some might say brashness) of his eye on the world.
"If you want to know about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface
of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it." AW, 1967
And what’s the point of art if it has no impact?
